Is it true that we only use 1% of our brain?

Why is this true? Can mind-mapping and Tony Buzan help us access the other 99%?Is it true that we only use 1% of our brain?
This is not true at all and it is also not true that we only use 10% of our brain. Indeed it is the case that pretty much all regions of the brain have been found to contribute functionally to who and what we are. However, this does not mean that we can consciously activate and manipulate the entire brain as we wish (which may be why people say we only use a tiny %)-many of the regions and functions in the brain amount only to unconscious behaviours (for example things like digestion can't be consciously controlled).

The most basic argument against only using 1% or even 10% of the brain comes from the notion of brain lesions or injury. If these percentages were accurate representations of brain activity, we would be able to receive injury to 90-99% of the brain without it having any effect on us. Obviously this is not the case at all-a haemorrhage (stroke) in any part of the brain usually has some effect on us, often quite serious. Also most people who suffer a moderate to severe head injury will end up with some kind of deficit if brain damage occurred (for example left hemisphere damage may result in speech problems). Deficits resulting from a head injury/lesion would be very rare if only 1-10% of the brain was used, but sadly this is not the case at all as they are relatively common. Damage to any region of the brain usually results in some cognitive and/or physical deficit, even if just temporarily.

It's important to remember that all regions of the brain are not active continuously all of the time-it would be near impossible to function normally if that occurred as it would be like having a fit. However, the different brain regions do all have a purpose and function that they carry out when required.

Hope this helps! Is it true that we only use 1% of our brain?
The use of only 1% of our conscious brain is true but only applies to those reading the sun and watching 'reality' TV !

we do use most of our brain, though these come in 3 states of consciousness: 1.consciousness; is the part of your brain which is limited to self, lets you think, do and make decisions in your every waking moment.

2. un-consciousness; allows your body to work and rejouvinate while you sleep,

some believe this is why we dream, the un-conscious mind may use the method of dreaming to distract the conscious mind so it can perform self preservation tasks that would awake the conscious mind.

3. sub-consciousness; allows for all the un-controllable tasks the body needs to do during the day---

like; hunger, awareness, reflex actions and all other body functions. the sub-conciousness has been known to speed up what we see and do so we can react faster to situations that may cause us harm like falling from a tree or avoiding being hit by a bus. our 3 minds need to be seperate in order---

for us to function fully as human beings. if these minds were all present at the same time as said before it would resemble a state of fits, which is why epoleptics have to avoid flashing images or lights. thier eye's are sensitive and cause the hyper-activity in the brain. they can avoid this by--

wearing specially made retractive light sunglasses.

our eye's is one of the more important aspects in this as it feeds the sub-consious mind awareness, when we close them for longer than 10 minutes the sub-conscious alerts the un-conscious mind to get ready for sleep. sleep science shows us that---

Something I've been interested in and maybe you can help me on this...

I'm interested in the suconsciousus and dreams. ie, why we dream, how we dream and what makes us dream.

If we don't use the whole of the brain, all of the time, how much of the brain is used without us being aware?

just at roughly that moment different parts of our brain are all active at the same time for 10 minutes which shows that most people slip into un-consciousness after 20 minutes when they close thier eye's at night unless the conscious and sub-conscious mind is stressed.

so to answer the question---

and Joolz question, the brain is working constantly during the day about 60% and while we sleep about 30% unless you are in a deep state of REM which is when your body is dreaming you use about 35-40%.if you were brain dead your body would slowly shut down and die. good old brain.

Natural Selection, look it up, this tells us that with every species on this planet that they are given exactly what they need to function. so therefore if this is true then why would we have been given suck a big brain if we could do all the same things with a smaller brain. your brain can use----

anything up to by our own definitions - 13% to learn and educate ourselves. i did not say that we use so much of our brains though i said our body does. to believe that we were given something for nothing just indicates ignorance, i have used under 1% of my brain usage because i can understand---

how some things work. the reason why i would go so far to say that our bodies use 90% of our brains is that all different area's of the brain have been linked to perform certain actions for the exception of 10%, the frontal lobe. which does effect our emotions but does not do anything it'self---

the brain contains so many nuerons that you could learn everything. we do not learn everything ';yet'; that comes with evolution. what i'm trying to say is that imagine if you had a terrabite hard drive, lets pretend thats the brain, we could use the full terrabite but instead our brain is only using-

what a long, boring and useless answer. I bet the asker and the answerer are the same person... Y!Answers should have invited specialists to answer that, and then put it as a feature on their main page. As is now, it's just like random talks...

I would like to point out that there are people who have had one hemisphere of their brain removed in order to control medical problems, and have suffered no noticeable side effects. Some people have the link between hemispheres severed and their medical complaints improve.

We do use one fraction of our brain, But people think its the comedy reaction ';Stupid';, ';Lazy';, ';Dumb';

If we used the rest of our brain, We'd be using too mutch. ';Small things make the big difference'; as some people say.

I Don't like James's idea of it coming down to ';Evolution';.

Boz-hemispherectomy is possible but not without some degree of hemiplegia in the opposite side of the body (i.e left hemispherectomy = hemiplegia in right side of body). There are no cases where this incredibly rare procedure has not resulted in some degree of cognitive deficit/physical disability.

This is false. Someone has taken your brain away %26amp; you probably didn't even know it. Well not taken away exactly, but decided that you don't use it. It's the old myth heard time %26amp; time again about how people only use _% of their brains. For people who repeat that myth though, it's probably true. lol

I've seen people that use less than 1%! Honestly, I don't know how people like that in the world put their pants on in the morning!!!

We only use 10% of our brain, if we use as much as you say, then there would be more genuises in this world andthe ability to do more stuffs than the normal humans are capable of. Besides the best answerer had no proof whatsoever. Putting down ';psychology student'; doesnt garunteed that you are one.

we all use all of our brain, those 10% theories are old and ridiculous

This was actually a quote taken from a neuroscience conference where the reporter allegedly fell half-asleep during it. It was subsequently wrongly attributed to Albert Einstein and then adopted by numerous businesses as part of yet another get-rich-quick-scheme.

In actual fact, what the neuroscientist was explaining was that during a common task they had observed that a previously inactive varying portion of participants' brains, constituting approximately 10-20% of their overall brain, became active in order to process and complete the task. Basically, it takes about 10-20% more brain to do something rather than nothing. Presumably, the only person in attendance who found this fascinating was a reporter who wasn't paying attention and therefore completely misunderstood what the speaker was saying.

In line with evolutionary theory, humans have been observed to use over 99% of our brain in total, at least.

Coincidentally, the belief that different sections of our tongue process different tastes was due to an in-adept translator.
No. Yes. No because all of our brain serves a purpose. Yes because we use only a tiny fraction of its capacity for association and coordination of disparate memory and input.

If you would access more of your ';brain capacity'; to achieve an end, then focus and awareness helps. First in developing focus is to avoid distractions. Our minds wander. Try, for example, to merely focus your attention on the sensation of your breathing for ten breaths. Observe the air entering the nostrils, the sensation of the air passing the adenoids, the rise, first of the abdomen, then the chest, then the fall of the chest and the relaxation of the abdomen. If you are very aware, very attentive, you can feel the energy from the uptake of oxygen, the cleansing from the exhalation of the carbon dioxide.

When you become aware that you have lost focus, then bring your attention back to the breath.

Thus practicing on your breath, you learn the skill of focus for application on other issues.
If we only use 1% of our brain, then if we get shot in the head there is a 99% chance of living because it will most likely not hit the part that is useful.

That doesn't make much sense, does it? Then we are obviously using more then 1% of it. You could say we are only using 1% of it's potential, but the whole brain would still be used. However, only using 1% of it's potential is not likely.
It is almost certainly not true but that is just my educated guess. Many people say we use 10% of our brain and I find even that hard to believe, I don't think we use all of our brain but most likely most of it.
No.

Anytime you hear one of these ironic sounding pieces of trivia, you can pretty much bet that they are false.

Take a neuropsychology course some time. You will learn pretty quickly that you use every square inch of your brain.
No this statement is false, an average human can only use up 10% of their brain's potential. Others that have spent years training mind and spirit such as monks or of some other form, can only reach a little over that percentage. Therefore Tony buzzan, (I'm assuming he's selling some type of product or lessons) is false, and WILL not help you achieve the other 99%.
Actualy the average human only uses 7% of his/her brain. And no, scientist dont know what if anything the other 93% does it can be any thing from storing memories from past lives to forgoten supernatural powers wich some relidions beleive we must unlock. albert einstein was beleived to use a wopping 13% of his brain.
no, scientists believed we used 10% of our brain, but they found out that we use 100% of our brain but 90% doesn't do anything
we use 10% of our brain.
