Is it true that using your laptop on electricity with the battery attached will diminish the battery life?

If that's all you do yes, the battery needs to be used or it goes bad, mine didIs it true that using your laptop on electricity with the battery attached will diminish the battery life?
(for some types of battery) That is possible !

The ';Memory Effect';

';Memory Effect'; is a condition of reduced battery performance (and eventual failure) due to a battery only using those cells that are fully discharged and charged on a regular basis.

In other words, if on a regular basis a NiCd or NiMH battery is only partially discharged before being recharged, it '; forgets'; that it has usable capacity to further discharge all the way down.

Yes. If you normally leave your laptop plugged in I would recommend removing the battery and purchasing a relatively inexpensive UPS to plug it into. Otherwise the battery will over time last a shorter and shorter period of time.

Laptop batteries are usually pretty expensive to replace which makes the cost of the UPS seem much better. Check out the cost of a replacement battery for your laptop before you start shopping for a UPS.

The other benefit of the UPS over the battery alone is that it provides a clean power stream via DC which eliminates any spikes / surges from the electrical feed.
No not at all. Your laptop battery will deplete it's life span only by charge and discharge otherwise known as normal use.
