Is it true we don't use our whole brain?

And if not, how much do we use?

The source of your information would be really appreciated.

ThnxIs it true we don't use our whole brain?
The myth that humans use only a fraction of thier brains is more about critical thinking and the mind rather than the actual physical apperatus of the brain.

The various methods of imaging (MRI, Pet Scan, CT Scan), clearly have demonstrated that different regions of the brain are activated for differing functions.

At any given time, only a portion of the brain is directly active, dependent upon whatever activity (behavior) a person is engaged in. Ultimately, every neuron of the brain will be engaged for some purpose. While a neuron or brain region may not be currently activated, it is functioning in a form of resting capacity (potential).

To what degree does an individual utilize the POTENTIAL of their thinking (cognitive) capacity? That definitely varies from person to person. Just look at human behavior and this is validated.

As a therapist who treats from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, I encounter people daily who have learned to operate on a form of ';auto-pilot'; -- reacting, instead of choosing to act and respond to the world they an in.

This most likely leads to a incorrect belief that we don't ';use'; all of our brain. Instead, I would say, we don't always pay attention to what we are thinking.

Beyond that, a discussion would evolve into the nature of consciousness, which has been debated throughout history to date.

This is kind of like defining infinity. Have we utilized the potential of our mind to its fullest? Is it true we don't use our whole brain?
yes
i have heard that the worlds most best scientists itself use their brain for about 2% .......according to science no man can use his brain above this ....................
This is true. Although drug experimentation probably enhances the rest.

Well, I'd heard that we only use a fraction of our brain thru-out our entire life, and if we lived for longer then we'd use more...but I only heard this from someone, so I don't know where they got it from.

sorry!
I do believe we use the whole brain just not at the same time, and yes some people are able to utilize the brain better then others. Different parts of the brain are used for different functions. It is a nice thing that not all think the same way, that way it makes the world and people more interesting. I am no doctor but a inquisitive person. Good question, makes people use that old gray matter. Have a good day.
I use all of my brain, but from the answers posted here, and some of the questions, most of you do not - or, perhaps you do, but your brains are less developed, possibly even troglodytes..
No. We use it all.
Believe it not we only use under 10% of our brains if were lucky!
we only use a small fraction about five to ten percent and thats including gret thinkers like Einstein who used only a small fraction more

In George Bush's case, he doesn't use ANY of it. Rumour has it that they had to call in a proctologist to give him a brain scan! =)
